Open Letter to Trump’s Deplorables

Dear Trump supporters,

By now nobody  can ignore that Trump’s an outright racist, misogynist, homophobe, islamophobe and xenophobe. The evidence in speeches, interviews and on Twitter is overwhelming. I agree with Hillary Clinton that most of the folks that still support him are also racists, homophobes, islamophobes and xenophobes, and that’s definitely deplorable. And I’m only saying “most” because who knows, maybe there’s some reason–a reason nobody has been able to pinpoint yet–for supporting Trump if you’re not a racist, homophobe, islamophobe or xenophobe? A reason that trumps (ugh!) basic human decency? If so, isn’t it about time that someone steps up and tells us about it? Because all us folks who try to be tolerant and accepting of others are at a loss here.

Okay, that was sarcastic of me. We’re not at a loss–you simply have no excuse. Let me explain why.

Sure, you are probably one of the many Americans who are struggling. You’re disillusioned with the government and you just want someone who says words you can understand. Someone who says it like it is. And you don’t care if those words form actual sentences. I get that, too; not everyone’s cut out to be a language snob.

The thing is: he does say it like it is–in his eyes. The world’s a dangerous place because of blacks, Hispanics, gays and Muslims. The country’s a disaster because of all those folks who aren’t white like he is. And women exist to be eye candy. If a woman fails at being eye candy, it’s open season in the Donald’s infantile Twitter world.

He couldn’t be any clearer about his feelings–there’s no gray area, no ambiguity, no room for misunderstanding. And you loudly agree and laugh along and applaud him.  How is that not deplorable?

If someone were at a party at my house, and he spewed the kind of rot that Trump does about women, blacks, Hispanics, gays and Muslims, I’d show him the door. Because I have friends who are women, black, Hispanic, gay and Muslim. Hell, I myself am a woman, and my daughter aspires to the same. My husband is Hispanic. Not only would I not want someone like Trump in my house and around my husband and children, I also wouldn’t want my guests to be subjected to that kind of abuse.

If, on the other hand, someone like that is at my party and I laugh along with all his disgusting talk, and I loudly agree with him and applaud him for telling it like it is, I can hardly be surprised if the other guests leave and look down on me from then on for being a pretty deplorable human being.

To put it in language that everyone can understand: If you behave deplorably, people are going to treat you like you’re deplorable. If you don’t want people to treat you like you’re deplorable, don’t behave  deplorably. There–I said it like it is and in complete sentences. You’re welcome.

I would love to know what you think, even about old posts.
